Digital correspondence of Frederick the Great
First critical edition of previously unpublished correspondence.
In keeping with Electronic Enlightenment's determination to enrich and enhance content found in the fixed collections of its printed base texts, we are proud to begin the updating and expansion of our collection of Frederick the Great's correspondence through the kind collaboration of Professor Katrin Kohl, University of Oxford.
The current collection, amounting to over 800 documents, is largely based on letters appearing in Besterman's edition of Voltaire's correspondence (1968–1977) and Leigh's edition of Rousseau's correspondence (1965–1998) — both published by the Voltaire Foundation, Oxford.
We begin with a rare, early letter — never previously published — written by a 20 year old Frederick while still crown prince. This letter will shortly be joined by others uncovered by Katrin Kohl in the holdings of the Bodleain Library.
Publication begins with:
- 1st tranche (published 2012) — an early letter from Crown Prince Frederick to a fellow army officer concerning venereal disease (includes English translation and manuscript image).
