Continent maps: S. America

Bibliographic details

EE has scanned images of the maps offered in the 1st edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica for inclusion in the EE Atlas.

The Encyclopædia Britannica, first published in Edinburgh, Scotland between 1768 and 1771, sought to improve upon the encyclopædias by Chambers, Owen and "the voluminous French Encyclopedie", following what it describes as a more scientific presentation of its materials than the "dictionary" style of those slightly earlier works. Therefore, instead of entirely separate articles for "armillary spheres", "globes", "maps" and so forth, one need only look under the entry for "Geography" to find:

. . . the doctrine of knowledge of the terreſtrial globe; or the ſcience that teaches and explains the properties of the earth, and the parts thereof which depend upon quantity.
